Family Violence Prevention Month
November is Family Violence Prevention Month in Alberta. It’s a time to raise awareness of the supports and resources available to all Albertans so we can work towards ending family violence and building healthier and safer communities.
Beginning in 1986 in the town of Hinton and eventually recognized by the Alberta Legislature, Family Violence Prevention Month inspires communities across the province and thousands of individuals to take part in preventing family violence by providing public education, awareness, and services.
This November, you can join The Today Centre in recognizing Family Violence Prevention Month by learning #WhereToTurn.
Here are some resources available to support those dealing with family violence:
The Family Violence Info Line (310-1818) is available toll-free to Albertans 24/7 in over 170 languages
The Family Violence Info Line Chat is available daily from 8am to 8pm in English
Province-wide, emergency shelters provide safe locations for people fleeing violent or abusive situations
The Today Centre offers multiple ways to reach out, such as through our Live Chat, by email or phone
And many other supports and resources are available
A great way to show your support of family violence prevention is to #GoPurple! The colour purple has been used for years, around the world and here at home in support of family violence prevention. You can join us in showing and sharing your support throughout November using the hashtags #GoPurpleAB and #WhereToTurn.
We all want to live in an Alberta where everyone feels safe. The Today Centre offers inclusive, integrated short-term support for those who are experiencing family violence. We offer safety planning, education on family violence, and connection to other resources in Edmonton and surrounding area. We are committed to ending family violence but we can’t do it alone; it will take all of us working together to promote healthy relationships and build safer communities.
