The Power of Giving: Your Impact
Donor generosity has one of the biggest impacts on nonprofits. Why? Because for many nonprofits, especially small ones, they rely on donors to help support the mission of their organization. Without donors, often many programs, projects, and services would not be available for those who may need them the most. Individuals would continue to live in fear, feel unsafe, or experience harm in their own homes.
Donors, we call them supporters, are invested in the work of the organization, usually have a passion for the mission, could have a personal connection to the issue, or generally just enjoy working with the organization. In our case, our supporters are a mix of them all! Not to mention that donors don’t have to be large scale funders, they can be as individual and unique as one person. One person who can make a difference and impact someone who often feels overwhelmed, afraid, and perhaps, like they are drowning. One person’s support changes that. One person’s support to be an “anchor” for someone.

This past year has been a momentous one for The Today Centre. In the 2024 calendar year alone, because of your support, The Today Centre team…
served 350 clients, resulting in 1276 hours of meetings
gave out 57 Lives on the Line phones
made connections with 1330 individuals, some of whom became clients and others we referred to other support services
saw 28 clients served by self-care items
saw 7 individuals benefits from the use of Safe at Last funds (amounts vary per person)
facilitated 107 different workshops to groups varying from youth to businesses, and everyone in between, and
gave out printed materials such as Today Booklets, brochures, youth resources, family violence guides, and more to over 80 different individuals and groups
Supporters like YOU enable and equip our team to support others. Your support has a ripple effect on those we serve and it is because of your support that these numbers are portrayed. Your support equips us with the tools and training to do our jobs most effectively and with up-to-date information in the sector. Your support employs the individuals who meet with clients and work with them to create safety and a sense of stability. Your support covers the foundational needs of the organization, establishing us with a base to meet clients where they are at and provide them a safe, empathetic, confidential, and non-judgmental space to feel heard, validated, and confident in their choices and experiences. “All of my sessions/interactions were positive. I looked forward to them because I knew I would feel heard and not judged. I learned about the cycle of abuse. I was able to understand that abuse might not always be overt and that the things I was feeling were a reality/there was a name for them. It helped me to fell ‘unstuck’. The check-in sessions, the listening to me, the assuring me that things I was experiencing were not just in my head - I appreciate that a lot. We have an incredible team of volunteers with The Today Centre who make every day impact by giving their time to help us out with projects, staffing tables, childminding, data entry, and more.
Volunteering your time allows you to give of a resource that has a direct result and fulfills an immediate need.

If volunteering isn’t your speed, getting involved in understanding the issue by taking a workshop, resharing resources and information, or simply choosing to become more aware of the issue, is just as meaningful and helps us move forward together.

Donating financially provides one of the biggest resources for The Today Centre. Funds received equip our team with training, enable us to print resources for clients or other service providers, purchases self-care items for clients who may leave with little, and more. There is so much that can be done with financial support that your gift will always go far!

Get your coworkers, friends, or family involved in hosting a fundraiser in support of The Today Centre. This could be an event where a portion of the proceeds support, a gift card drive for our Safe At Last or Safety in Motion programs, or a item drive for our client self-care area. The possibilities are endless and you can have fun doing it!

Resharing accurate information, resharing resources from local organizations, and more, help spread awareness about the prevalence of family violence in our communities and also helps de-stigmatize it too. When we show that we’re a safe place for others to disclose or that we are informed on a topic, we can call out behaviours that perpetuate harmful beliefs on who victims and survivors are ‘supposed to be’ or ‘supposed to act’. Together, we can spread awareness with information that is relevant, accurate, and informed.

This year we received a donation that will make a lasting and life-changing impact on our clients’ lives and the growth of our organization. We are excited to announce we received an incredibly generous $50,000 donation from Subaru City, a part of CanadaOne Auto group, in support of a safer, more compassionate community!
These funds will, in-part, go directly towards our client services, supporting our client Christmas program, our client self-care area for those who leave with nothing but the clothes on their back, and our programs which help those with identified high-risks and financial barriers. Stay tuned all year for how this amazing donation uplifts and empowers our clients!
